Magnesium oxide, Magnesium hydroxide or Magnesium chloride are also used for phosphorus removal in waste waters. Precipitation of phosphorus into struvite in easily achievable which can then be reused as a fertilizer. When substituting FeCl3 or AlCl3, no specific equipment required.

It buffers at a pH of about 9 so there is no risk of a pH overshooting and the reaction speed is comparable to the other chemicals. It is also environmentally friendly, safe and easy to handle.

Neutralization of wastewater
In all industrial processes requiring water, particular care is given to the treatment of wastewater before discharging it back into the natural environment.
In all cases, the pH is an important parameter for the good progress of the process and / or for the protection of the environment:
-> Before the biological treatment in wastewater treatment plant, whether it is integrated or communal, pH control is a sine qua non condition to ensure the effectiveness of biological treatment (pH 6 -6.5). Too high pH leads to a degradation of the bacteriological environment and therefore affects the treatment of organic matter.
-> At the entrance of metanisation When the plant is equipped with a methanizer, ph control is a paramount parameter for the proper functioning of this one. In fact, the acetogenesis and methanogenesis reactions are the most effective at a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.
-> Prior to release to the natural environment, wastewater must meet controlled criteria to comply with regulatory standards. The pH of the wastewater must be neutralized in order to adapt to the pH level of the natural water (pH 6.5-8.5).
An alternative to soda for neutralization
For all these applications, caustic soda is still the reagent most commonly used for its neutralizing power. Nevertheless, this product is more and more questioned because it has several notorious disadvantages. Indeed, sodium hydroxide NaOH, more commonly called caustic soda, is officially classified as a corrosive product. This involves risks for equipment, for the environment, and for humans. The handling of this reagent therefore requires the implementation of numerous safety measures.
